56. Verb + ing or to … one (remember/ regret etc.)
A | Some verbs are followed by -ing and some are followed past to ... B | Some verbs tin be followed by -ing or to ... with a difference of meaning: call up I remember doing something= I did information technology and at present I remember this. You think doing something later you have done it. · I know I locked the door. I clearly recollect locking information technology. (=I locked information technology, and now I retrieve this) · He could remember driving along the road just before the accident, only he couldn't call up the accident itself. | I remembered to do something= I remembered that I had to practise it, so I did it. You recall to practise something before you do it. · I remembered to lock the door, but I forgot to shut the windows. (= I remembered that I had to lock information technology, and so I locked it) · I must call up to pay the electricity bill. (= I must not forget to pay information technology) | regret I regret doing something= I did it and now I'm sorry nigh it: · I now regret proverb what I said. I shouldn't take said it. · Do you regret not going to higher? | I regret to say /to tell you / to inform y'all = I'thou distressing that I have to say (etc.): · (from a formal letter) We regret to inform you that your awarding has been unsuccessful. | become on Become on doing something = continue with the aforementioned affair: · The president paused for a moment and then went on talking . · We need to change. C | The following verbs tin be followed by -ing or to .. . with no difference of meaning: begin | starting time | continue | intend | carp | So y'all tin say: · Information technology started raining . or Information technology started to rain . · Andy intends buying a house. or Andy intends to purchase ... · Don't bother locking the door. or Don't bother to lock ... But normally we practice not use -ing after -ing : · It's starting to rain . (not information technology's starting raining) |
